When people think of the Philippines, you can automatically think of it as one of the top tourist destinations in Asia. Travelers around the globe can attest to this and here are some reasons why people should come to The Pearl of The Orient Seas.
THE PEOPLE: Filipino Hospitality is unparalleled to the rest of the world.
Filipinos are generally the most welcoming and amiable people you’ll ever meet. More so, they’re very respectful and they always seem happy and smiling, even when they face difficult times, calamities, and trials. Another interesting fact about Pinoys (term commonly used to call Filipinos locally) is that they love to sing and dance whenever there is an occasion such as birthdays, weddings, feasts and festivals.
Whether you’re just traveling to PH for vacation or studying to learn ESL, getting in touch with locals and becoming friends with them is much easier than in other countries. You will meet so many people from around the globe but you’ll never meet such faithful, kind and caring friends like Pinoys.
BLISSFUL BEACHES AND WATERS
Philippines is one of the largest island groups in the world with 7,107 islands. From Palawan to Cebu to Siargao and etc., the Philippines has islands and beaches everywhere… You can hardly find better beaches in the world than here. The White Beach in Boracay is probably and constantly rated as one of the Top 10 beaches of the world. It may not be the best one, but undoubtedly the most famous one. Cebu is also known for its seaside resorts and scuba-diving spots.
If you are interested in white sandy beaches and bluish-green crystal-clear waters, you’re in the right place. The Philippines is composed of 7,107 islands, so it isn’t hard to find a perfect island here and having it all for yourself.
PH has one of the most diverse wildlife in the world. It is a habitat of various species of animals and plants. A popular specie of monkey in the world is the Philippine Tarsier which is one of the smallest (and probably the cutest). You will also find more than 600 species of birds, 300 species of reptiles and amphibians and at least 400 coral species. From the giant whale shark in to the world’s smallest fish, the Pandaca pygmea, everything you can wish to see of is combined in the beautiful islands of the Philippines.
Some breath-taking landmarks in PH are the mesmerizing Chocolate Hills in Bohol, the Rice Terraces in Banaue, the incredible archipelago of El Nido. You can hike to one of the many volcanoes, e.g. Mt. Pinatubo, or see the world’s smallest volcano, Taal. You can explore the caves, lakes and waterfalls. If you are fond of nature, you will love it here in the Philippines.
Pinoys are foodies. They love to eat and there are a wide variety of dishes worth trying! Filipino food is a mix of different cuisines varying from Chinese, Spanish, Japanese and American. Here are some must-tries:
- Adobo, a dish with chicken, beef or pork cooked with vinegar and soy sauce.
- Lechon, a roasted suckling pig skewered on a bamboo pole
- Sinigang, a tamarind based sour soup.
- Barbecue sticks of chicken or pork, Isaw (pork intestines), and Kwek-kwek (fried orange quail eggs)
- Pancit, cooked noodles with veggies and meat.
- If you’re brave, you should try Balut, a boiled egg with an infantile duck (embryo) inside!
- Of course, one must taste the fresh seafood, from lobsters to crabs, tiger prawns, octopus, you will find it all for affordable prices all over the country
- Heavenly “Halo-Halo”, a delicious treat made of milk, kidney beans, several fruits and ice cream.
- And definitely a must: the fruits in PH are simply mouth-watering that you can have them anytime and anywhere – fresh and cheap, like pineapples, coconuts, mangoes, durians (the taste is incomparable despite the strong odor), papayas and etc…
LANGUAGE ISN’T A PROB!
More than 90% of the Filipinos speaks English. One great advantage of PH to other Asian countries is that almost everybody speaks English – from a 3 year old child to a senior citizen. English is the language generally used in the government, and it’s the preference for written communication, not just in school but also for businesses. You can easily find a stack of English version of newspapers and magazines everywhere. And probably the ability of the Filipinos to speak English as their second language is a benefit for them to attract many foreigners from other countries who want to study ESL efficiently.
JEEPNEYS: EXPLORE THE COUNTRY LIKE A NATIVE.
Another thing you ought to do while in the Philippines is riding in or on a jeepney! Why? Because it’s simply fun! It’s inexpensive and it’s breezy that you don’t need of an air conditioner anymore! But what are these jeepneys and where do they come from? The U.S troops left old military jeeps during the World War 2. Then, the inventive Filipinos opened the back of the jeeps, added two benches, gave them a flamboyant and unique design, decorative adornments, loud paintings, stars, dots and sometimes even additional lights. Since then, the Pinoy jeepney became a traditional symbol of the country.
A typical jeepney can carry 16 – 20 passengers, two up front next to the driver and 14 – 18 seated in the back facing each other on two benches. Well, that’s the normal case, but often you’ll see an extra body hanging outside or onto the back, or people even occupy the roof.
These are just some of the interesting facts that will allure visitors from all over the world to come and discover the Philippines. There are still too many others to mention but let’s just skip all the summaries and just board the plane and fly here to PH where fun and smiles never stops.
